Laguna Beach artist and sculptor Cheryl Ekstrom had a dynamic personality, personal style and art form.

Her art and aesthetics were as adventurous and beautiful as she was,” friend and artist Sandra Jones Campbell said. “Even her own presence had this wonderful beauty to it.”
Ekstrom died last weekend at the age of 71 after being diagnosed with liver cancer earlier this year, Campbell said.
One of Ekstrom’s pieces, “Warriors United,” can be seen in North Laguna in Jahraus Park.
The piece is a seven-foot bronze deer warrior sculpture with three outwardly facing figures that Ekstrom created to represent protection and strength.
Ever since she was in seventh grade, Ekstrom believed that old items were treasures that could be reborn in a new way through sculptural work.
Throughout her career, Ekstrom frequented swap meets, technology graveyards and unlikely places to find pieces for her work.
