    Diamond spent 1938-39 in Paris on his Guggenheim Fellowship, returning to the U.S. at the start of the Second World War. These were lean years for Diamond, though an impressive number of awards and commissions during the 1940s somewhat relieved Diamond's struggle for daily needs.
