North Vietnamese military leader

General Vo Nguyen Giap was the leader of the North Vietnamese military forces for over thirty years.

He began his career by fighting against French colonial forces during the Indochina War. One of his greatest achievements came in the decisive battle of Dien Bien Phu, which ended that war in 1954. Giap also oversaw the North Vietnamese military strategy during the Vietnam War.

Under his guidance, the Communist forces frustrated the U.S. military by using tactics of guerilla warfare.
